The short version
- You do not need an account, and we do not ask for your name or email to run a check.
- Our server does not store the text you submit or the files you upload.
- Our logs contain no text.
- Your text is sent to Pangram Labs so it can be analysed, and Pangram's own terms govern what it does with it.
- Our analytics are anonymous events that never include your text.
The data flow, step by step
- You submit text. You paste it into the box or upload a TXT, DOCX or PDF file of up to 10 MB. Your browser sends it to our server.
- Uploads are handled in memory. If you upload a file, we read it and pull out the plain text while it is held in memory. We do not save the file to disk, and we do not keep a copy once the request is finished.
- We send the text to Pangram. To get a result, our server passes the text to the Pangram Labs API. This is the one place your text leaves our server.
- We show you the result. Pangram returns labels for each passage. We turn them into a verdict, a share of flagged text and highlights, and send that back to your browser. Nothing is saved unless you have an account and turn saving on, and even then we save only a summary, never your text.
What we keep
Our server logs a small record of each request so we can fix problems and watch for abuse. A record contains a request ID, the action performed, how long it took, which provider handled it, the outcome, and the word count. It does not contain your text, any part of your text, or the contents of an uploaded file.
What Pangram receives
Your text is sent to Pangram Labs to be analysed. Pangram's API documentation does not state a retention policy for standard text checks, so we cannot tell you how long Pangram keeps text or whether it is used for any other purpose. Pangram's own terms and privacy policy, available at pangram.com , govern that. If that is not acceptable for your text, please do not submit it.
As a rule, avoid submitting anything confidential, such as unpublished work you do not have the right to share, other people's personal details, or documents under a confidentiality agreement.
Analytics
We record anonymous events so we can see whether the tool works and where it is slow. An event describes what happened in broad terms: the word-count bucket of a check (for example, a range rather than an exact figure), the verdict category, and the duration bucket. Events never contain your text or the contents of an upload.
Accounts
You do not need an account to check text. If you choose to sign in, this is what we hold and why:
- Your email address, to sign you in and to apply your account's larger daily allowance. We send you a one-time sign-in link; there is no password.
- A session, kept as a hashed token, so you stay signed in on that browser for up to 30 days. Signing out ends it.
- Saved history, only if you turn it on. Each saved check is a summary: the date, the verdict, the flagged share, the confidence, the word count and the detection provider. It never includes the text you checked, and it is off until you switch it on in your account.
You can delete your saved history, or your whole account with its email, sessions and history, from the account page at any time. We use your email only for signing you in. We do not send marketing email and we do not sell or share it. Your checked text is still sent to Pangram whether or not you are signed in.
Your choices
- Do not submit text you are not comfortable sending to a third-party detector.
- Remove names and personal details from text before checking it if they are not needed for the check.
- Read Pangram's terms before checking sensitive material.
You can see what the result means on the methodology page, and the rules for using the checker are in our terms.
